Anxiety 101

Understanding Anxiety Through the Human Givens Approach

Anxiety is a common human experience and, from a Human Givens perspective, it is not a flaw or failure. Instead, anxiety is a natural response that arises when important human needs are not being fully met.

Human Givens psychotherapy is based on the idea that we are all born with essential emotional needs — such as security, connection, autonomy, meaning, and time to rest. When these needs are out of balance, the nervous system can remain stuck in a state of high alert, leading to feelings of anxiety and overwhelm.

Rather than viewing anxiety as something to fight, Human Givens encourages us to see it as a signal. It is the body and mind trying to protect us, letting us know that something needs attention.

Anxiety is closely linked to the nervous system being stuck in “fight or flight.” In this state, thinking becomes harder, worries loop, and the body struggles to relax. Human Givens recognises that calming the body is often the first step to calming the mind. Techniques such as breathing, relaxation, guided imagery, and gentle movement can help signal safety and restore balance.

Another key principle is the role of the imagination. Anxiety often involves imagining future threats that feel real to the body. Learning to regain control of the imagination can significantly reduce anxious responses.

Human Givens is practical, compassionate, and forward-focused. It aims to help people feel calmer quickly by supporting the nervous system and meeting core needs more effectively.

Anxiety is not who you are — it is a message. With understanding and the right support, it can soften and ease.
