Frequently asked questions.

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique that uses hypnosis to create a state of focused attention and increased suggestibility. It aims to help individuals access their subconscious mind to address a variety of psychological and behavioural issues. Through guided relaxation and concentration, a hypnotherapist helps clients explore thoughts, feelings, and memories that may be influencing their current behaviour. Hypnotherapy is commonly used to manage stress, anxiety, phobias, addictions, and habits, as well as to alleviate pain and improve sleep. It is a safe and evidence-based approach that supports mental and emotional wellbeing by promoting positive change and self-awareness.

Will I lose control during Hypnotherapy?

No, you will not lose control during hypnotherapy. Contrary to popular misconception, hypnotherapy is a collaborative process in which you remain fully aware and in control at all times. The hypnotherapist guides you into a deeply relaxed state, often described as focused attention, to help you access your subconscious mind more effectively. Throughout the session, you retain the ability to accept or reject suggestions and can emerge from the hypnotic state whenever you choose. Hypnotherapy is a safe and ethical practice designed to support your wellbeing, not to override your free will or autonomy.

Can everyone be hypnotised?

Can everyone be hypnotised?

Hypnosis is often misunderstood, but it is a natural state of focused attention and heightened suggestibility. Most people can be hypnotised to some degree, provided they are willing and open to the experience. The key factor is the individual's responsiveness, which varies from person to person. Hypnosis requires cooperation and a certain level of trust between the practitioner and the client. It is not mind control or magic, but rather a collaborative process that can aid in relaxation, therapeutic change, and personal growth.

At Emma Charlton, our approach combines the mindfulness of Pilates and Yoga with the transformative potential of hypnotherapy to support both body and mind. Whether you are seeking to manage stress, improve wellbeing, or unlock creative potential, hypnosis can be a valuable tool when guided professionally. Remember, your openness and intention lay the foundation for the experience.

If you have a story or goal you wish to explore—be it personal transformation or creative expression—hypnosis can help you access the inner resources needed to bring it to life.

What does a hypnotherapy session feel like?

A hypnotherapy session is a deeply personal experience that varies from person to person, but generally, it begins with a calm and focused conversation between you and the hypnotherapist. You’ll be guided into a relaxed state, often described as similar to daydreaming or light sleep, where your mind remains aware yet open to positive suggestions.

During this state, you may feel peaceful and deeply connected to your inner thoughts, with heightened concentration on particular goals or issues you wish to address—be it reducing stress, overcoming fears, or enhancing confidence. Many describe a sense of mental clarity and emotional release by the session’s end.

Ultimately, a hypnotherapy session offers a safe and supportive environment to explore your subconscious mind, enabling transformative change aligned with your personal aspirations—whether that’s launching a business, cultivating creativity, or simply improving wellbeing.

What can hypnotherapy help with?

Hypnotherapy offers a holistic approach to mental and physical wellbeing, helping with:

  • Stress and anxiety: reduces stress by reframing negative thoughts.

  • Phobias and fears: eases irrational fears by addressing root causes.

  • Smoking cessation: alters subconscious smoking associations.

  • Weight management: supports healthy habits and behaviour change.

  • Sleep problems: promotes relaxation and better sleep.

  • Pain management: lessens chronic pain perception.

  • Confidence and self-esteem: boosts positive self-belief.

  • Habits and behaviour: aids lasting change in habits like nail biting.

  • Emotional trauma and grief: helps process and heal past trauma.

Working at the subconscious level, hypnotherapy complements Pilates and yoga for balanced mind and body.

Is hypnotherapy safe?

Hypnotherapy is safe when done by qualified practitioners. It uses guided relaxation and focused attention to access deep thoughts and memories. Clients stay aware and in control throughout. It's not suitable for those with severe psychosis or dissociative disorders without medical advice. When done professionally, hypnotherapy can help manage stress, anxiety, pain, and behavioural issues. Always choose a registered, qualified hypnotherapist.

How many hypnotherapy sessions will I need?

The number of hypnotherapy sessions required varies depending on the individual and the issue being addressed. Some people experience significant benefits after just one or two sessions, particularly for specific concerns such as smoking cessation or managing mild anxiety. More complex or deep-rooted issues, such as chronic stress, phobias, or behavioural patterns, may require a course of 4 to 8 sessions or more.

During an initial consultation, your hypnotherapist will assess your situation and provide a personalised recommendation based on your goals, responsiveness to hypnosis, and overall wellbeing. Progress is regularly reviewed to ensure the therapy is effective and to determine if further sessions are beneficial.

Consistent attendance and active participation can enhance the effectiveness of hypnotherapy, allowing for lasting positive change in both mind and body.

Will I remember what happens?

Whether you will remember what happens depends largely on the context and your state of mind during the experience. In practices such as hypnotherapy, for example, many individuals retain clear memories of the session, while others might only recall fragments or feel a general sense of the experience without specific details. Similarly, in mindfulness and yoga practices, the clarity of memory often improves as your awareness and focus deepen over time.

If you are concerned about memory retention during any therapeutic or wellbeing activity, it can be helpful to discuss this with your practitioner. They can provide guidance tailored to your experience, ensuring you feel comfortable and supported throughout. Remember, the goal of these practices is to enhance your mental and physical wellbeing, and memory clarity will often improve as a natural part of your progress.

How long do the effects of Hypnotherapy last?

The duration of the effects of hypnotherapy can vary depending on several factors, including the nature of the issue being addressed, the individual's responsiveness to hypnosis, and the number of sessions attended. For many clients, positive changes can be experienced immediately after a session, but these effects often consolidate and deepen with subsequent treatments.

In general, the benefits of hypnotherapy tend to last from several months to years. For some issues, such as smoking cessation or phobia reduction, a few sessions might provide long-term relief. However, conditions related to chronic stress, anxiety, or deep-seated behavioural patterns may require ongoing sessions to maintain progress and prevent relapse.

Regular reinforcement through follow-up sessions, self-hypnosis practices, or complementary wellbeing activities like Pilates and yoga can help sustain the therapeutic outcomes. Ultimately, the longevity of hypnotherapy effects depends on the individual's commitment and the complexity of their goals.
