Say Goodbye Winter and Hello Spring

As the last chill of winter softens and the light begins to linger, we find ourselves at a powerful threshold. Winter asks us to slow down, retreat, conserve. It is a season of stillness, of deep rest, of gathering energy beneath the surface.

But spring… spring is movement. It is direction. It is possibility.

Just as bulbs push through cold soil and trees stretch new buds toward the sky, we too are invited to shed stagnation and step forward with renewed purpose.

From Stagnation to Flow

During winter, it’s natural to feel heavier — physically and emotionally. We may notice sluggish digestion, low motivation, tight hips and shoulders, or a sense of being “stuck.” This isn’t failure; it’s seasonal wisdom.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), winter is governed by the Water element — deep, inward, restorative. But as we transition into spring, we enter the domain of the Wood element.

Wood energy is growth. Expansion. Vision. Planning.
It is the energy of a sapling pushing upward, of ideas wanting to take form.

And within the body, Wood is closely connected to the Liver and Gallbladder meridians.

The Wood Element: Liver & Gallbladder

In TCM, the Liver is responsible for the smooth flow of Qi (life force energy). When Liver energy flows freely, we feel clear, decisive, creative, and emotionally balanced.

When it stagnates, we may feel:

  • Irritable or frustrated

  • Indecisive

  • Bloated or sluggish

  • Tight through the hips, ribs, and shoulders

  • Low in motivation

The Gallbladder supports decision-making, courage, and direction. Together, they help us move forward with purpose.

Spring is the perfect time to support these organs — physically and energetically — through mindful movement, breath, and intention.

Yin Yoga for Spring Renewal

Yin yoga beautifully complements this seasonal shift. Its long-held, mindful poses gently stimulate the meridian lines of the Liver and Gallbladder, particularly along the inner and outer legs, hips, and sides of the body.

Twisting and side-bending shapes help:

  • Encourage digestive flow

  • Gently “wring out” stagnation

  • Increase circulation

  • Support natural detoxification pathways

  • Release stored tension in fascia

  • Create space for deeper breath

Poses such as:

  • Dragonfly

  • Shoelace

  • Twisted roots

  • Low lunge with side bend

  • Reclined spinal twists

…invite movement where winter may have left us feeling stuck.

As you soften into these shapes, imagine squeezing out the old — frustration, heaviness, doubt — and creating space for clarity and forward motion.

Supporting Digestion & Cleansing

The Liver plays a vital role in detoxification and blood regulation. Gentle compression and release through twists enhances circulation and supports the body’s natural cleansing processes.

When circulation improves, tissues are nourished. When Qi flows, digestion improves. When digestion improves, energy rises.

Spring is not about harsh detoxes or punishing resets. It’s about restoring flow.

Warm lemon water. Seasonal greens. Gentle movement. Conscious breath.

Small daily rituals that signal to the body: We are waking up now.

Moving Forward with Intention

The Wood element also governs vision — our ability to see where we are going.

Ask yourself:

  • What seeds have been quietly forming over winter?

  • What feels ready to grow?

  • Where do I need courage to move forward?

In your Yin practice, allow stillness to reveal direction. Let twists help you look back briefly — acknowledging winter’s lessons — before turning your gaze ahead.

Spring energy is purposeful but not rushed. Like a tree, you grow steadily upward while remaining rooted.

A Gentle Invitation

This season, say goodbye to stagnation with compassion. Thank winter for its rest. Then consciously choose movement.

Open the hips. Twist the spine. Breathe into the ribs.
Stimulate circulation. Support digestion. Create space.

And as you rise from your mat, carry that Wood energy with you — flexible yet strong, grounded yet growing, clear in direction.

Spring is here.
And so is your next chapter. 🌱
